In 1950, Takumi Tsuchiya was employed as a lecturer at the Beppu Women’s University in Oita Prefecture. He conducted research on barley genetics while teaching biology. After seven years in Oita, he completed his Doctor of Agriculture degree while working with Professor Hitoshi Kihara at the Kihara Institute of Biological Research near Yokohama. He joined the faculty of the Department of Agronomy at Colorado State University, continued his research on barley and other plants, and developed a vigorous research program which attracted numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
