The Potential Forms of Hita Dialect in Oita Prefecture : The Regional and Generational Difference Found in a Three-Generation Questionnaire Survey

This 2^<nd> survey in Hita was carried out in Feb 2007. The 1^<st> survey in Sep 2004 showed that Hita Dialect had the most fixed relation between the form and meaning. The number of sample, however, was so small that the 2^<nd> survey was conducted. The result of this survey shows that [-kiru] has expanded the range of the meaning. A new finding in this survey is that [-e (re) reru] in Hita Dialect still keeps the meaning, "As for A, ... is possible according to his/her situation at the time," whose condition has the element of "invisibile." [-kiru] and possible verbs, however, are making their ways into this semantic domain. The semantic structure of potential forms in Hita was older than any of those in other areas that I surveyed before.
