There are precedent studies, which suggest there are 3 divisions in the expressions of ability in Oita dialect. But the studies are not generally accepted. This report investigates into the differences of the usage of the expressions of ability among 3 generations in HASAMA town, Oita-gun. The results are as follows. (1) The form that expresses an ability to do has changed from "a verb for ability (yome-ru : can read)" to "-kiru (yomi-kiru)". (2) "A verb for ability" has changed its meaning from "an ability to do" to "subjective conditional probability". The form has changed from "yome-ru" to "yome-re-ru". (3) The younger generation (Age 35, male) uses the form, "-re-ru", for expressing their feelings. For instance, "yome-re-ru" for joy, yome-reN for regret. This is another meaning, which cannot be included in the 3 divisions of the expressions of ability. (4) -reru form (yoma-reru) of a conditional ability is going out of use. (5) The change has occurred in the last 30 years.
