Lead concentration in some benthic algae collected near shore at Amatsu-Kominato, the Pacific Ocean side of the Boso Penninsula, was determined by GFAAS after isolation of lead with anion exchange resin. Difference in lead concentration was observed according to their species and growing situation at the shore. The brown algae seemed to contain more lead than the red algae on the average. Among the brown algae, a species which grows in the infralittoral zone contained 200 ppb lead, while the algae which grow in the upper and middle sublittoral zones had 20-120 ppb and 20-30 ppb lead, respectively. The main difference in lead concentration at their distribution depths should have resulted from the exporsure time to the air and rain.
